ASA reference

About ASA style
ASA is the reference style of the American Sociological Association, used across sociology.
How ASA references work
ASA is an author–date style based on Chicago. A reference list with no matching in-text citations is not ASA format, which is why the in-text form is generated beside every reference here.
Applied, not generated
The format is applied by a fixed set of rules, so the same input always produces the same reference — no model decides where a comma goes.
If your department's brief differs from what you see, follow the brief. A style guide is whatever your marker says it is.
Frequently asked questions
- What is ASA citation style?
- The style of the American Sociological Association, used across sociology. It is an author–date style based on the author–date version of Chicago, so in-text citations carry the author surname and year.
- Why is only the first author inverted?
- It is the ASA convention: the first author is listed surname-first so the list can be alphabetised, and every author after that reads in normal order — “Danziger, Sheldon and David Ratner”.
- How do I cite a page number in ASA?
- Put it after the year with a colon and no space: (Smith 2020:145). The colon rather than a comma or “p.” is the ASA form.
- Which ASA edition does this follow?
- The 7th edition, published in 2022, which updated title capitalisation and the guidance on citing digital works. If your department still specifies the 6th, check the title case before submitting.
Citations are the easy part
Referencing is mechanical. The draft around it is not — ReverseGPT writes with cited sources, checks the claims and edits the prose, in one place.
