IEEE Citation Generator
IEEE references, built as you type. No sign-up, and the format is applied exactly — not guessed by a model.
IEEE reference
Paste a reference, or start typing. It builds as you go — there is nothing to submit.
About IEEE style
IEEE is the reference style of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, used across engineering and computer science.
How IEEE references work
IEEE is a numbered style. References are numbered in the order they are first cited and referred to by that number in square brackets, so the number depends on position in your document rather than on the reference.
Applied, not generated
The format is applied by a fixed set of rules, so the same input always produces the same reference — no model decides where a comma goes.
If your department's brief differs from what you see, follow the brief. A style guide is whatever your marker says it is.
Frequently asked questions
- What is IEEE citation style?
- The reference style of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, used across engineering and computer science. References are numbered in citation order and referred to in the text by that number in square brackets.
- Why are the initials before the surname?
- That is the IEEE convention for the reference list: “A. B. Smith” rather than “Smith, A. B.”. It is the opposite of most author–date styles and one of the fastest ways to spot a reference list that has been converted carelessly.
- How do I number my references?
- In the order they are first cited in the text, starting at [1] — not alphabetically. Because the number depends on position, this tool shows [1]; renumber as you place each reference in your document.
- How many authors before et al.?
- IEEE lists up to six authors in full. With more than six, only the first is given, followed by et al. This tool applies that rule automatically.
Citations are the easy part
Referencing is mechanical. The draft around it is not — ReverseGPT writes with cited sources, checks the claims and edits the prose, in one place.
